Painting Portals
I interact with these canvases as ongoing contemplations, gradually adding to them over a long period of time. It usually takes a long time for me to get to a point where I consider these complete—sometimes I decide to augment a painting I once felt was complete. I find peculiar interest in these liminal states of the paintings being formed, taking my time, living with them, seeing them daily, ideas of what to do with them forms gradually… suddenly... I savor the lingering indecision of what to make of them, allowing the contemplation to simmer, breathe and crystalize. It’s usually when I visualize an idea which won’t go away that I chose to commit to it.
This is a medium in which I practice distant contemplation—creation by accumulation. The starting points may stem from vague concepts, emotions, specific imagery, curiosity of colors, a phrase, needing to use the rest of a paint tube before it goes to waste… And I’ll often find some component long before or after the painting’s conception which happens to tie together. I find a peculiar satisfaction in this process of collaging together ideas otherwise fragmented by space and time. Compensation for patiently observing, rather than closing and dismissing the contemplation.
I am quite personally attached to these, as they are very much a part of my daily life but I am considering making prints available of these paintings throughout their various states and may eventually sell the originals once my available space for displaying/ storing them gets too overwhelming.

I had a tube of “chromatic green” which was sealed so tightly, I decided to cut it open and just use all the paint before it dried. I mixed some white in just to cause variations of shade, sort of aimlessly smearing it around... From that base layer, I gradually fill in details to the shapes that formed.

One of my canvases fell into this one, leaving a gash. I used that as inspiration.
